Eiko Borcherding: 'Untitled' (2021) pencil on paper, collage, 29,7 x 21 cm
Throughout the epochs and across national borders, birds have a great symbolic significance in art. Almost weightlessly sailing through the air they wander between the worlds, able to foresee what lies far ahead- you can observe their movements, be inspired, and let your spirit become light as a feather. Birds stand for fertility vitality and they represent the all-important peace on earth. In Eiko Bocherding’s artwork, the owl is enthroned somewhat askew, yet holds the symbol of wisdom deep inside. Underneath, a flock of birds emerging from the neatly folded history of the antique paper. They begin to sing - a vivacious twittering of melodious songs - unfold the shawl and let their tunes be heard.
